The idea that subtext is not just found in dialogue, but set up through plot and character, was a breakthrough for me. Now I can see how it works. I'm not confident of my own ability to handle it yet, but I am more confident than I was and I can see that I will be able to improve by practising these skills on my own.

I would say that if you have any questions or confusion about subtext, this is the place to go. All my questions on the subject were answered, and I now feel I understand what subtext is and how to go about using it.

I was dumbfounded to learn there are so many different ways to create amazing subtext. Lots of those ways are relatively easy too. I watched my boring dialogue come alive, and I'm just a beginner. In less than two weeks, I've elevated my writing 100 fold using these skills.

If you're interested in standing out above your competition, you seriously need to consider taking this class. Whether this is your first screenplay or your tenth, honing your ability to write killer subtext takes your script to a new level that could get you noticed and help fast track your career as a screenwriter.

Learning about the different levels of subtext throughout a script was helpful. The most valuable insight is the understanding that subtext creates empathy between the audience and the character which makes the story pop. Thanks.

I learned how to enrich and expand the dialogue and agendas of the characters to guide each scene to unfold and build into the next, until the conclusion of the story.

The clarity on the concept that every line of dialogue must resonate with a core character trait for that character was extremely "ah-ha" in it's simplicity. The clear use of MODELS for every aspect of dialogue writing and evaluation and the way all the concepts are broken down and delineated is brilliant. It's the best and most useful instruction I have seen. Complex creative problems are broken down and organized in comprehensible building blocks that then add up to a solid, well-built structure.

Information is organized in do-able pieces that fit together into a successful whole vision of the creative problem of screenwriting. The complex task of conveying emotion and vision in a condensed blueprint has been so carefully thought through by Hal and his team that it's a pleasure to engage in every lesson. No dogma and goofy theories. No negative, oppressive cult of personality. Hal presents a realistic and clear-eyed view of creating a creative product and presenting it in a competitive marketplace.

The corporate training model of breaking down screenwriting is brilliant. As a veteran of the industry I find Hal's instruction deeply thought through, solid and easy to immediately put into practice, step by step. The impact on my writing has been striking. I appreciate Hal's positive attitude and respect for his students. In an industry where the opposite often prevails, Hal's honorably upbeat, practical craftsmanship approach is refreshing.

I like having a list of dialogue tactics to reference when writing screenplays. I'd recommend this to anyone whether writing fiction or screenplays as a way to keep dialogue from being on the nose and demonstrating the interpersonal dynamics of the characters.
